San Sebastiano

Jusepe de Ribera

1652

San Sebastiano by Jusepe de Ribera, 1652

Ribera, known as 'Lo Spagnoletto' or the little Spaniard, delivers a visceral punch with this depiction of Saint Sebastian. Bound to a tree with an arrow piercing his side, the martyr looks heavenward in a blend of agony and ecstasy, bathed in the dramatic chiaroscuro lighting Ribera learned from Caravaggio. Painted in 1652, the year of his death, this late work strips away the usual idealized beauty of the saint, replacing it with a raw, muscular realism that makes the suffering feel uncomfortably immediate. It’s a masterclass in Baroque drama, proving that Ribera never lost his touch for making religious scenes feel intensely human.
