西勒诺斯 by Jusepe de Ribera, 1628

Imagine the ultimate mythological hangover: here lies Silenus, the drunken tutor of the wine god Dionysus, sprawled out in a fleshy heap while his satyr companions party around him. A massive wine barrel dominates the background as a goat-legged figure leans over it, while another rugged satyr leans in close to the reclining Silenus, who clutches a cup in a daze. Even a donkey pokes its head into the frame from the right, adding to the barnyard chaos of this Baroque scene. Ribera, known for his gritty realism, refuses to make these figures look like perfect Greek statues; instead, he gives them bulging bellies and wrinkled skin, making the intoxication feel raw and uncomfortably real.
