Act VII
1806
Before he became famous for that giant wave, Hokusai was busy capturing the high-stakes drama of Kabuki theater. This print, titled 'Act VII', freezes a violent moment from the classic story of the 47 Ronin (Chushingura). A samurai raises his sword to strike a fallen man near a tranquil river, while a woman in a red kimono looks on in distress and another warrior rushes from the house. The peaceful pink clouds and crescent moon in the background create a striking, almost ironic contrast with the bloody action in the foreground.
