Act VIII
1806
Hokusai brings the theater to the page in this vibrant 1806 woodblock print illustrating Act VIII of the legendary play *The Treasury of Loyal Retainers* (Chushingura). Two figures in elaborate kimonos stroll along a coastal path—one notably armed with swords—while a team of porters struggles to haul a palanquin up a steep, grassy hill in the background. It’s a bustling scene of travel and duty that captures the essence of the famous 47 Ronin story, showcasing Hokusai's storytelling skills long before he created his iconic Great Wave.
