Xiaoxiang Scroll - Full Scroll, Silk 50×141 by Dong Yuan

Dong Yuan, a pioneer of the 'Southern School' of landscape painting, created this misty masterpiece to capture the serene beauty of the Xiao and Xiang rivers. Instead of sharp, jagged peaks, he used soft, rounded 'hemp-fiber' brushstrokes to make the mountains look like they are breathing in the humid southern air. This scroll is a visual time capsule, flanked by centuries of calligraphy from later admirers who couldn't resist adding their own poems and collector seals. It basically set the template for how Chinese scholars would dream of nature for the next thousand years.
