Crow Flying in the Snow by Kawanabe Kyōsai, ca. 1887

Kawanabe Kyōsai, nicknamed the 'Demon of Painting' for his chaotic genius, throws a crow into the void with aggressive, slashing brushstrokes that push traditional Japanese ink painting to its limits. The bird screams into the silence, its beak agape against a backdrop of snowy mist that feels incredibly cold and lonely. Kyōsai was famous for painting furiously fast, often while intoxicated, and you can feel that manic energy in the way the dark ink splatters and feathers splay out. It’s a masterclass in capturing raw spirit over realistic detail.
