Kawanabe Kyōsai, often called the 'Demon of Painting' for his wild energy and incredible speed, captures a brutal moment of nature here. An eagle with fiercely detailed feathers dives headfirst into churning waves, its talons locked onto a thrashing, dragon-like fish. The dynamic brushstrokes create a sense of violent motion, making you almost feel the splash of the water. Kyōsai was a famously eccentric artist in 19th-century Japan who would often hold wild 'painting parties,' getting drunk and painting furiously on the backs of his guests!
