Monte Fuji by Kawanabe Kyōsai, ca. 1887

Kawanabe Kyōsai, nicknamed the 'Demon of Painting' for his wild antics and lightning-fast brushwork, brings a moody drama to this classic view of Mount Fuji. Jagged, ink-drenched rocks and gnarled pine trees dominate the foreground with heavy, aggressive strokes, while the famous snow-capped peak floats ethereally in the misty distance. This piece perfectly showcases his unique talent for merging the strict rules of traditional Kanō school painting with a looser, more expressive energy. Legend has it Kyōsai would often paint while thoroughly drunk, yet he could produce masterpieces of such delicate balance and control.
