Two Children Playing with Goldfish
ca. 1887
Kawanabe Kyōsai, a rebellious artist once nicknamed the 'Demon of Painting' for his wild caricatures, captures a moment of pure childhood wonder here. Two chubby-cheeked toddlers lean precariously over a large stone basin, completely mesmerized by the goldfish swimming below, while a frog leaps through the grassy background as if joining the game. Although Kyōsai was famous for satirical sketches that often got him arrested by the Meiji government, this piece showcases his incredible skill in traditional Japanese painting, blending delicate ink washes with the lively, almost cartoonish charm that made him a legend.
