The Central Market
1936
Kawase Hasui captures the bustling energy of Tokyo's Central Market in 1936, showing workers in aprons and hats hauling crates and pushing carts past a vintage truck. This piece is a fantastic example of the shin-hanga (new prints) movement, which revived traditional Japanese woodblock printing by adding Western-influenced lighting and realistic perspectives to everyday scenes. Hasui was known as a 'traveler' artist, constantly sketching landscapes and cityscapes across Japan to capture the fleeting moods of different places and times.
