Spring in Arashiyama by Kawase Hasui, 1934

Kawase Hasui, a master of the Shin-hanga (new prints) movement, captures a serene spring morning in Arashiyama, Kyoto, with breathtaking simplicity. Tall, reddish-brown pine trees frame the scene, their dark green needles contrasting beautifully with the delicate white blossoms of a cherry tree in the foreground. Through the trunks, we glimpse a traditional boat gliding across the calm, blue waters of the Oi River, with a boatman poling it along. Hasui was famous for his atmospheric landscapes that evoked a sense of nostalgia and tranquility, often traveling extensively across Japan to sketch these quiet moments before turning them into stunning woodblock prints.
