Saint Bartholomew
1435
Here stands Saint Bartholomew, looking a bit startled as he clutches a bright red book and his trademark flaying knife—grim reminders of his martyrdom. Painted by Konrad Witz in 1435, this panel was originally part of a larger altarpiece. Witz was a pioneer in bringing realistic, three-dimensional space to Northern European art, and you can see it in the heavy, sculptural folds of the saint's white robes and the convincing shadows cast against the stone column. It’s a striking mix of holy solemnity and almost unsettling realism that was groundbreaking for its time.
