The Annunciation
Lavinia Fontana, one of the rare female artists to achieve massive success in 16th-century Italy, delivers a dramatic Mannerist take on the Annunciation here. The Archangel Gabriel bursts into the scene with colorful, ruffled wings and a lily, while God the Father shoots a beam of light—carrying the Holy Spirit as a tiny dove—straight toward a startled Mary. Kneeling humbly at her ornate prayer desk in traditional pink and blue robes, Mary accepts the divine message with a gesture of modest surprise. Fontana was famous for her rich textures and bold compositions, proving she could easily hold her own against the male masters of her time.
