Hirte in 'Daphnis und Chloe'
1912 - 1916
Léon Bakst designed this electric costume for a shepherd in the Ballets Russes' production of 'Daphnis et Chloé,' bringing Maurice Ravel's music to visual life. The figure is caught in a dynamic leap, draped in a swirling purple dotted tunic and a green skirt patterned with red figures that look like little dancers themselves. Bakst was the visual genius behind Diaghilev's famous dance troupe, and his bold, exotic use of color shocked Parisian audiences and completely revolutionized fashion and stage design in the 1910s.
