Dense Forest and Distant Peaks, on silk - complete scroll
Li Cheng was the master of making mountains look like they were breathing, and this handscroll is a perfect example of his moody, atmospheric style. The dark, misty peaks and distinctive 'crab-claw' trees on the right create a sense of deep, ancient wilderness. The long stretch of calligraphy on the left acts like a historical guestbook, where later admirers—including the famous Qianlong Emperor—scribbled their poetic thoughts over the centuries. Unrolling this scroll was meant to be a slow, meditative journey through a landscape that feels both grand and intimately quiet.
