Lovis Corinth captured a bridge in Basel with a frantic energy that defines his later years. After suffering a debilitating stroke in 1911 that paralyzed his right side, he was forced to relearn his craft with his left hand. This physical limitation actually liberated his style, transforming his work from stiff realism into the wild, scratchy lines seen here. The handwritten note at the bottom, 'zweiter Zustand' (second state), reveals the artist was tweaking the plate to get the perfect balance of light and shadow on the water.
