Lovis Corinth

1916

Erpice by Lovis Corinth, 1916

Lovis Corinth attacked this paper with frantic, scratchy lines to depict two heavy wooden harrows resting in a field. Created in 1916 during the turmoil of World War I, this piece showcases his later Expressionist style, which became much wilder and more emotional after a stroke left him partially paralyzed years earlier. Instead of a polished, realistic farm scene, the jagged, almost violent strokes turn these simple agricultural tools into dynamic, looming structures. You can see his signature scrawled boldly at the bottom, a testament to an artist who found new power in chaos.
