Expulsion from Paradise
1919
Lovis Corinth's 1919 woodcut 'Expulsion from Paradise' (Austreibung aus dem Paradies) is a raw, emotional take on the classic biblical scene. Instead of a polished Renaissance look, we see jagged, frantic lines as a massive, winged angel drives Adam and Eve out of Eden. The figures look almost like they're carved from the woodblock itself, their bodies twisted in anguish. Corinth created this late in life after suffering a stroke that completely transformed his style from realistic to wildly expressive, making this a powerful example of German Expressionism.
