Nu debout
1914
Lovis Corinth’s 1914 sketch 'Stehender Akt' (Standing Nude) bursts with raw energy, far removed from the polished nudes of the previous century. Notice the aggressive, diagonal hatching that builds the woman's form—it looks like he’s carving her out of the page with sheer force. This vigorous style was a direct result of a severe stroke Corinth suffered in 1911, which shook up his technique and pushed him toward Expressionism. Instead of a perfect face, we get a shadowed, mysterious visage, forcing us to focus on the powerful, grounded stance of the figure.
