Ecce Hommo

Luca Giordano

1650-1659

Ecce Hommo by Luca Giordano, 1650-1659

Luca Giordano was a child prodigy nicknamed 'Luca fa presto' (Luca paints fast) because he worked with such blistering speed. In this dramatic 'Ecce Homo' scene, he captures the tense moment Jesus is presented to a mocking crowd. While Jesus stands quietly on a balcony in the upper left, draped in red, the foreground is a chaotic riot of shouting faces, including a man in a giant yellow turban and a soldier in a bright red outfit. It’s a perfect example of Baroque drama—high contrast, emotional expressions, and a sense of immediate action that pulls you right into the biblical story.
