The Adoration of the Magi
ca. 1508
Luca Signorelli, a master who actually influenced a young Michelangelo, turns this biblical moment into a spectacular display of Renaissance fashion around 1508. The Three Kings are decked out in heavy, gold-embroidered brocades that look incredibly stiff and expensive, contrasting sharply with the humble ox and donkey peeking from the shed. The kneeling king in green leans in with intense focus on the baby Jesus, who sits on Mary's lap looking surprisingly sturdy and alert. In the background, a busy caravan of horses and travelers winds through the hills, showing that this was quite the royal procession.
