The Crucifixion
c. 1504-1505
Luca Signorelli packs this chaotic scene with a dizzying array of soldiers, horses, and mourners, all crammed beneath three towering crosses. Notice the striking red and white striped leggings on the soldiers in the foreground—a bold fashion choice that draws the eye right into the heart of the Renaissance drama. While the central figure of Christ hangs solemnly, the surrounding crowd is a whirlwind of activity, from weeping women at the bottom left to armored guards on horseback. Signorelli was a master of the human form, and you can see his signature muscular figures even in this crowded, emotional moment.
