The Fall of Man
1509
Lucas Cranach the Elder's 'Der Sündenfall' (The Fall of Man) packs the Garden of Eden with a surprisingly peaceful menagerie of lions, stags, and goats, all hanging out while humanity's biggest mistake is about to happen. Eve reaches up to grab the forbidden fruit as a serpent coils around the tree branch, while Adam sits casually beside her, already taking a bite. Created in 1509, this print is just one of many versions Cranach produced of this biblical scene, a theme he returned to constantly to showcase his talent for depicting the human form and intricate natural details.
