A Council Of Elders by Ludwig Deutsch

Ludwig Deutsch, an Austrian-born artist who found fame in Paris, was utterly obsessed with capturing the 'exotic' East. He traveled to Egypt multiple times, filling sketchbooks and taking photographs to use as references for his incredibly detailed studio paintings. Here, a group of elders gathers in a sun-dappled courtyard, their rich robes and turbans rendered with meticulous care. While these Orientalist scenes were wildly popular with European collectors who dreamed of distant lands, they often presented a romanticized, staged version of daily life rather than strict reality.
