銅制毒蛇
1549
Step into a biblical snake pit! This chaotic scene depicts the story of the Brazen Serpent, where the Israelites are being bitten by fiery serpents as punishment. In the background, a tall pole holds up a bronze snake—look closely at the top center—and those who gaze upon it are miraculously healed. You can see desperate figures reaching out or writhing in agony, their bodies twisted into exaggerated, muscular knots typical of the late Renaissance Mannerist style. Heemskerck, a Dutch artist who spent time in Rome studying ruins and anatomy, clearly loved showing off his skill with the human form here, creating a scene that feels more like a horror movie than a peaceful religious tableau.
