수리남 곤충의 발생과 변태에 관한 논문, 도판 56 by Maria Sibylla Merian, 1726

Maria Sibylla Merian was a scientific pioneer who traveled to the jungles of Suriname in 1699, a daring feat for a woman of her time. This detailed engraving captures a slice of that tropical ecosystem, featuring a tall, flowering plant that anchors the composition. Hovering above is a large, winged insect, while below, a patterned frog and swimming tadpoles share the watery terrain with a spiky aquatic nymph. Merian used her art to debunk the myth of spontaneous generation, meticulously documenting metamorphosis, and her observations were so precise that Carl Linnaeus later used her drawings to classify species.
