The Choice of a Model
1868-1874
Imagine walking into a lavish, pink-walled room that's slowly falling apart—literally. The ceiling is caving in with peeling paint, yet the gold Rococo decorations still shine brightly. A group of men dressed in fancy 18th-century outfits, complete with wigs and breeches, are gathered around, critically examining a nude woman posing on a pedestal. This is Mariano Fortuny's 'The Choice of a Model,' a painting that captures the intense obsession of art collectors and critics. Fortuny was a master of detail, painting the fabrics and textures with incredible precision, contrasting them with the loose, ruinous background. Sadly, he died in 1874 before finishing this masterpiece, leaving us with a brilliant, frozen moment of artistic judgment.
