The Tower of Babel
1595
Van Valckenborch channels the style of Pieter Bruegel the Elder to depict the ultimate construction project gone wrong. The tower dominates the landscape like a colossal stone wedding cake, spiraling upward with hundreds of tiny arches and swarming with ant-like laborers. In the bottom right, a crowned king—likely the biblical King Nimrod—gestures proudly at his creation while workers in the foreground haul heavy stones and carve blocks. The background reveals a bustling harbor and city, emphasizing the massive scale of this ambition, all just moments before God confuses their languages and brings the whole project to a chaotic halt.
