Newburyport Meadows by Martin Johnson Heade, ca. 1876-81

Martin Johnson Heade was absolutely obsessed with the moody skies over the salt marshes of Newburyport, Massachusetts, painting this scene dozens of times. In this dramatic version from around 1876, a dark, brooding storm cloud dominates the left side, but a single, heavenly shaft of sunlight breaks through to illuminate tiny haymakers in the distance. This style, often called Luminism, focuses on the serene, glowing effects of light and atmosphere rather than dramatic action. Heade's fascination with these flat, expansive landscapes shows how American artists were finding profound beauty in their own backyard, far away from the European Alps.
