The Great Carrying of the Cross by Martin Schongauer

Martin Schongauer, a master engraver who actually influenced the young Albrecht Dürer, packed this chaotic scene with incredible detail. You can see Jesus struggling under the massive cross, surrounded by a frantic crowd of soldiers, horses, and onlookers, all rendered with meticulous, scratchy lines. This print was so popular in the late 15th century that it was copied and spread all over Europe, essentially making Schongauer one of the first international art celebrities of the print world. The sheer number of figures crammed into the rocky landscape shows off his amazing ability to organize visual chaos.
