La sepoltura di Cristo

Martin Schongauer

La sepoltura di Cristo by Martin Schongauer

Martin Schongauer, a master of the Northern Renaissance, captures the heartbreaking moment of Christ being lowered into the tomb in this intricate engraving. Notice the heavy, sculptural folds of the robes and the anguish on the faces of the mourners—Schongauer was actually a goldsmith's son, which explains his incredible attention to detail and texture. You can spot his famous 'M & S' monogram at the bottom center, a signature that made his prints so popular they were copied all over Europe. In fact, a young Albrecht Dürer admired Schongauer so much that he tried to copy his style, leading some historians to initially confuse their early works!
