The Baptism of Christ in the Jordan
c. 1480-90
Martin Schongauer, a Northern Renaissance master whose engravings were so famous that a young Michelangelo copied them, captures the Baptism of Christ with incredible precision. Notice the monogram 'M t S' at the bottom—Schongauer was one of the first artists to sign his prints this way, essentially creating the first artist brand! John the Baptist, clad in animal skins, pours water over a kneeling Jesus, while an angel patiently holds the dry robes on the riverbank. Above them, the Holy Trinity is fully represented with God the Father and the Holy Spirit as a dove looking down on the scene, all rendered in Schongauer's signature fine, cross-hatched lines.
