De Vlucht naar Egypte by Martin Schongauer, ca. 1470

Martin Schongauer brings a wild, miraculous legend to life in this intricate engraving, showing angels rustling in the trees to pick fruit for the Holy Family during their escape to Egypt. Mary rides a donkey with baby Jesus in her lap, looking surprisingly calm while Joseph hauls a massive palm branch. This print was a superstar of the 15th century—so famous that a young Albrecht Dürer copied it to learn the craft. You can spot Schongauer's signature monogram 'M t S' at the very bottom, a branding move that helped make him the first celebrity printmaker.
