Veronica Holding the Sweat Cloth

Martin Schongauer

Veronica Holding the Sweat Cloth by Martin Schongauer

Saint Veronica stands solemnly in this masterful engraving, displaying a large cloth bearing the miraculous face of Christ. According to Christian legend, she wiped Jesus' brow on the way to the crucifixion, and his features were permanently imprinted on the fabric—a relic known as the Veil of Veronica. Martin Schongauer, a pioneer of printmaking in the late 15th century, signed this piece with his distinctive 'M S' monogram at the bottom. His incredible skill with the engraving tool was so renowned that it heavily influenced a young Albrecht Dürer.
