Bust of a Little Girl
1902
Mary Cassatt, an American artist who became a central figure in the French Impressionist movement, had a special talent for capturing the quiet intimacy of mothers and children. Here, a young girl with wide, dark eyes peeks out from beneath an enormous, fluffy white hat that dominates the composition. The energetic, scribbled strokes of pastel against the warm brown paper create a sense of immediacy, as if Cassatt caught the child in a fleeting, unposed moment. She often worked in pastels, a medium championed by her friend Edgar Degas, to achieve these soft, luminous effects.
