Hot Water Urn
ca. 1790
Matthew Boulton, the industrial powerhouse behind the steam engine, didn't just make machines; he made style. This design for a hot water urn features classic Neoclassical flair, with ram's head handles and fluted sides that would have looked right at home in a Roman temple. Complete with a spigot for dispensing hot water for tea, it was the ultimate status symbol for a Georgian dinner party. Boulton's Soho Manufactory churned out these luxury goods, proving that the Industrial Revolution could be beautiful.
