ケベックからのレヴィ by Maurice Galbraith Cullen, 1906

Maurice Galbraith Cullen captures the biting chill of a Canadian winter in this stunning 1906 view across the St. Lawrence River. Standing on the heights of Quebec City, the artist looks toward the town of Levis, where a lone steamship cuts through the icy, slushy water, leaving a trail of dark smoke against the pale, frozen landscape. The buildings on the left huddle together against the cold, their dark roofs contrasting with the expansive, shimmering whites and blues of the snow and ice. As a pioneer of Canadian Impressionism, Cullen was obsessed with how light played off snow, and here he masterfully translates the crisp, freezing atmosphere onto the canvas, making you almost feel the frost in the air.
