Dostoïevski I
1921
Max Beckmann channels the intense psychological depth of Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky in this striking 1921 portrait. The scratchy, aggressive lines—typical of German Expressionism—give the writer a haunted, brooding look that feels like it jumped straight out of *Crime and Punishment*. The inscription 'I/X' at the bottom left indicates this is the first print in a very limited edition of just ten, making it a rare collector's piece. Beckmann wasn't interested in flattery; he used these jagged forms to capture the raw, turbulent soul of the literary giant.
