四等車 II

四等車 II by Max Beckmann, 1913

Created just a year before World War I broke out, this scene of cramped, weary travelers feels almost prophetic of the chaos to come. Max Beckmann uses jagged, scratchy lines to convey the anxiety of modern life, a hallmark of the Expressionist movement. The figures are slumped in exhaustion in what looks like a fourth-class train carriage, barely acknowledging the crowd pressing in on them from behind the partition.
