Max Beckmann’s 1914 print 'The Inspection' (Die Musterung) throws us right into the chaotic anxiety of a military draft at the start of World War I. You can almost feel the shivering vulnerability of these elongated, naked men as they are scrutinized by a dark, looming figure, rendered with frantic, scratchy lines that scream Expressionist tension. Beckmann actually volunteered for the war that same year, only to suffer a traumatic breakdown on the front lines, making this scene of helpless bodies a haunting prophecy of the horror he was about to face.
