Il cervo
1946
Max Beckmann’s 1946 print 'The Buck' throws us into a strange, sketchy world where a ragged goat stands on a bucket next to a tall, mysterious figure in a long coat. The goat’s dark, scribbled fur looks almost aggressive, while the human figure—face shadowed by a wide hat—holds up a hand as if performing a magic trick or making a solemn vow. Created just after World War II during Beckmann’s exile, this piece screams Expressionism with its loose, jagged lines and sense of unease. It feels like a snapshot from a dark, surreal circus where humans and animals are equally lost.
