Windwijzer
1946
Max Beckmann created this striking lithograph in 1946 while living in exile in St. Louis, channeling the anxiety of a world rebuilding after war. He transforms a nude female figure into a human weather vane, perched precariously on a pole and gripping a spear to pivot with the changing winds of fate. Below her, two heavy, dark birds perch on a railing, seemingly whispering secrets to one another while a tiny sailboat drifts in the distance. It’s a vivid example of Expressionism, where Beckmann uses surreal allegory to explore themes of destiny and the unknown.
