Lilas en fleurs by Max Slevogt, ca 1921

Max Slevogt captures the wild, untamed beauty of a garden in full spring bloom with thick, energetic brushstrokes that practically vibrate on the canvas. As a leading figure of German Impressionism, he spent his later years painting his beloved estate, Neukastel, where he could watch nature explode with color. The vibrant purples and lush greens make you feel the warm breeze and almost smell the sweet, heavy scent of the lilacs. Unlike his earlier, darker works, these late garden scenes are pure, joyful celebrations of light and life.
