Wooded Landscape with Cottage and Horseman
1663
Step into the peaceful Dutch countryside with Meindert Hobbema, a master of the Golden Age who loved painting lush, wooded escapes. A lone traveler in a bright red coat rides his white horse along a winding dirt path, passing a cozy brick cottage tucked beneath massive, gnarled oak trees. The dramatic, billowing clouds overhead show off Hobbema's incredible skill at capturing light and atmosphere, a talent he learned from his famous teacher, Jacob van Ruisdael. Interestingly, despite his talent for these serene landscapes, Hobbema eventually quit painting altogether to take a steady job as a wine inspector for the city of Amsterdam!
