Wooded Landscape with Watermill
c. 1665
Meindert Hobbema masterfully captures the moody, overcast skies typical of the Dutch Golden Age in this lush, wooded scene. A massive, twisting tree dominates the center, its branches reaching out like gnarled fingers over a tranquil stream and a rustic watermill. In the foreground, a hunter in a striking red coat takes aim, adding a sudden burst of action to the otherwise peaceful countryside. Hobbema, a student of the famous Jacob van Ruisdael, was known for his incredibly detailed and atmospheric landscapes, though he sadly gave up painting later in life to work as a wine gauger!
