Woodland Road by Meindert Hobbema, ca. 1670

Meindert Hobbema, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, captures a quiet moment on a dirt track winding through a dense forest. Notice how the massive, billowing clouds dominate the sky, a classic trick of 17th-century Dutch landscape painters to make the earth feel grounded and small. Two tiny figures stroll down the path, dwarfed by the towering oaks and the dramatic weather rolling in above them. Hobbema was actually a student of the famous Jacob van Ruisdael, and you can see that teacher's influence in the moody, atmospheric lighting and the rugged, naturalistic details like the fallen logs in the foreground.
