Scenes of the Xiaoxiang Rivers Handscroll - Colophon 5
Imagine an ancient VIP guestbook for a masterpiece—that's essentially what this scroll section is. It features elegant running script calligraphy and numerous red collector seals, serving as a colophon (commentary) for Mi Youren's famous 'Strange Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers.' The text actually mentions 'Xiao Mi' (a nickname for Mi Youren) and appears to include writing by the Ming Dynasty titan Dong Qichang, who was obsessively admiring the original painter's 'ink play.' It's a visual record of art history where later masters literally wrote their praise directly onto the scroll, creating a conversation across centuries.
