A nude man (after Masaccio) and two figures behind him by Michelangelo

Even geniuses have to do their homework, and here we see a young Michelangelo copying a master. He is sketching the shivering, naked figure from Masaccio's famous fresco 'The Baptism of the Neophyte' in the Brancacci Chapel. Notice the intense cross-hatching Michelangelo uses to build up the muscles and capture that cold, huddled posture of the central man. It is a fascinating glimpse into how Renaissance artists learned their craft—by intensely studying and redrawing the works of those who came before them.
