Allegory of the Virgin Patroness of the Dominicans
Miguel Cabrera, a superstar of 18th-century Mexican art, painted this heavenly scene where the Virgin Mary acts as a giant protective umbrella for the Dominican order. She stands tall in the center, holding a massive cloak that shelters a group of praying friars and nuns, while Jesus gestures toward a kneeling saint below. Two cherubs at the top help hold up the edges of her cloak, adding a touch of whimsy to the serious religious gathering. It's a classic Baroque power move, showing divine favor and protection in a dramatic, cloud-filled composition.
