Sanctuaries and Citadels','zh-CN by Nicholas Roerich, 1925

Nicholas Roerich painted this rugged landscape during his epic Central Asian Expedition in the 1920s, a massive trek where he searched for the mythical kingdom of Shambhala. The earthy reds and ochres of the hillside contrast sharply with the cool blues of the distant mountains, creating a dreamlike atmosphere typical of his Symbolist style. The structure looming at the top resembles a Tibetan fortress, standing guard over the barren terrain. Roerich was such a passionate protector of culture that he was actually nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for creating a treaty to safeguard art and monuments during wartime!
